Rijksmuseum de Gevangenpoort is an icon in The Hague, beautifully situated on the Hofvijver. In the 13th century, this building formed the imposing gateway to the Binnenhof. A few centuries later, it became a prison and courthouse for the powerful Court of Holland. Here, suspected criminals awaited trial and debtors were locked up. Today, Rijksmuseum de Gevangenpoort tells the thrilling story of crime and punishment in bygone times.
The Gevangenpoort is a historic building. There are many narrow stairs, thresholds, and uneven floors. Unfortunately, the museum is not suitable for wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers. There are (currently) no special facilities for the blind and visually impaired. However, gloves are available to borrow to allow visitors to touch certain objects. There are (currently) no special facilities for visitors with (red-green) color blindness. Visitors who find it difficult to visit the museum independently may bring a companion. This companion may enter free of charge. The companion ticket is only available at the ticket counter. Upon arrival, please report to one of the hostesses or hosts in the entrance hall.
