Samar and the Cowardly King is a humorous and moving fairy tale about fear and power, about control and imagination, and about what happens when one person decides not to join in.
Samar and the Cowardly King is a comedic, magical-realist performance about a king who is terrified of everything… but especially of elephants.
They are coming. Everyone knows that. And that is precisely the problem. The king locks himself up in his castle and lets himself be influenced by Fear, who sees danger everywhere. To keep the elephants out, he builds walls and devises rules. Everyone must be the same, speak the same, think the same. Deviating is dangerous. Everyone goes along with it. Except Samar.
Samar is not afraid, not of the elephants and certainly not of the king. She does not want to abide by rules that no one truly understands. She sees Fear too, but does not take it too seriously. While the king tries increasingly desperately to maintain control, Samar shakes everything to its core.
